What're we here for?
We started Podmetto in the spring of 2018, during a contentious primary to become the Democratic Governor candidate. Chris, Jarrod and Jake were all discussing how to stay involved in the political process in a newer, fresher way that had the potential to use our insights and experience as candidates, campaign staffers and party leaders. We landed on the idea of creating a podcast that pulls back the curtain on local and state politics -- because the 24 hour news cycle keeps us updated on Trump and what's happening in Washington but we didn't see anyone working to educate, motivate and inspire folks to get involved right here in our own communities. We hope that Podmetto inspires you and others in your community to volunteer on campaigns, to donate, to work for a candidate or to run for office yourself.
So buckle up as we talk political news, campaigns, candidates and how to be involved across the Palmetto State in the political process. We're glad you're here.
Who We Are
“Politics is not a spectator sport.”
Chris is an attorney and political nerd currently working as a public defender in Greenville. Born into an Army family, he lived in Hawaii, Georgia, and Texas before the family settled in Spartanburg, SC when Chris was seven. He attended Spartanburg High School and continued his education at the University of South Carolina Honors College where he studied Political Science and Philosophy. He continued on to the University of South Carolina's School of Law, joining the SC Bar in 2015.
Like many other millennials, Chris' first major foray into politics was volunteering for President Obama's 2008 primary and general election campaigns as a high school senior and college freshman. He continued to be involved in politics and policy through his studies, serving as President of the University's first sustainable residence hall, "Green Quad," interning in Washington D.C., and volunteering for President Obama's 2012 reelection campaign. In law school, he served as treasurer of the Public Interest Law Society, raising funds for law students to pursue public interest summer positions that would otherwise be unpaid. He clerked at the South Carolina Appleseed Legal Justice Center and the Death Penalty Research and Defense Center, working on behalf of low-income South Carolinians. This included helping to establish Appleseed's Lawyers 4 Vets Clinic, which provides a variety of free legal assistance to low-income veterans. His research and writing focused on the War on Drugs, and its disproportionate impact on minorities and low-income people.
In 2016, Chris ran for U.S. House in his home district of South Carolina's Fourth Congressional District, challenging well-known incumbent Trey Gowdy. He became the Democratic nominee in March, making him the youngest major-party nominee for federal office in 2016, at the age of 26. His campaign centered on the need for criminal justice reform, assisting veterans, and improving access to education.
A lifelong soccer player, Chris played youth soccer for years with Carolina Football Club of Spartanburg, and continued with intramurals and the International Football Club at USC during college and law school. You can still find him playing with local teams in leagues throughout the Greenville area.
“Good people with good ideas and good hearts make great candidates.”
Jarrod has been in South Carolina for 5 years but comes from Minnesota. You will probably pick up on an "Oh, yea. Sure. You betcha!" right after a "y'all" on Podmetto. He's a graduate of St. Cloud State University with degrees in Political Science and Public Relations. He works full-time for a creative design and communications agency; serves on the Board of Directors for Pleasant Valley Connection, Imagine Upstate, Greenville Polo Classic, The People’s Potluck, and Greenville Young Professionals (GYP). He’s currently one of the 2019 ‘Greenville Finest’ with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - SC Chapter.
Jarrod is our resident campaign staffer. He has served as a communications staffer and consultant for campaigns across South Carolina. He's worked with State Senator Karl Allen, Congressional Candidates Mary Geren (SC-3) and Will Morin (SC-4), Trav Robertson's 2017 South Carolina Democratic Party Chair campaign, South Carolina Democratic Party, and Greenville County Democratic Party.
In Jarrod's spare time he enjoys CycleBar, working with local non-profits, Twitter, reading political biographies, and exploring Greenville (and all of South Carolina) with his dogs, Memphis & Rowan (ig: @memphisandrowan).
“So, um...let's not yell into the mic while I have the headphones on.”
Jake is the technical director and producer of Podmetto. A lifelong resident of the Upstate, Jake spends his days running his law practice and his nights making music and tinkering with vintage music gear.
